#127: Chimeras & Other Creatures

Hello dear readers!

Hot off the heels of my last post (if a week later counts as hot), here is another short issue of the Penflower Post.
I know these are usually biweekly, but I wanted to get back into the regular posting schedule.
As I write this on Friday morning I have been feebly wrestling with a cold for the past two days. One of the things I loathe most in life is having creative inspiration but feeling too ill to do anything about it.
Fortunately I’m beginning to feel a little better and have been able to put pen to paper.

Modular Fantasy RPG Project Update

Something I completely forgot to mention last week was that I have finally decided on a name for my work-in-progress modular fantasy TTRPG.
I’ve decided (about 90%) to settle on Chimeric Fantasy. The idea is that if I ever choose to make other genre variants, I can continue to use “Chimeric” as the main title. E.g. Chimeric Sci-Fi, Chimeric Horror, etc.

Obviously, with a name decided, I could not help but start sketching ideas for a logo and/or cover design.
The text document itself isn’t even finished yet… sigh. Either way, I’m sharing it below, mainly because I think it looks really cool.

A chimeric creature sits perched atop the words "Chimeric Fantasy". The creature has red fur, spiraling gold horns and hooves of a goat, a wild boar's mane, snout and tusks, the ears, front paws and tail of a rat, the arms and legs of an ape, and large orange and gold wings. Floating above the first "I" in "Chimeric" and between the creature's paws is a golden 10 sided die.

I had originally toyed with the idea of using the Chimera of ancient Greek mythology, or another similar hybrid beast. However, as they all seemed a bit too aggressive or scary, I decided to make my own.
I don’t have an official name for them yet, but they include features from some of my favourite animals. These include mice and rats, pigs and boars, goats, apes and birds.
After a lot of fiddling around with fonts, I eventually decided to just design the text from scratch. I am particularly pleased with how “Fantasy” looks, and how the creature’s tail makes up part of the second “A”.

Halloween Adoptables

For the month of October, every day I will be creating a Halloween-themed creature.
After every six days, I’ll be publishing them in groups of six on my website as adoptables.
I’m doing this as a creative challenge, but also in the hopes that it will cover some of the hefty expenses I had over the past few months. Below are the first three adoptables:

Composite image, featuring three traditionally hand drawn and digitally coloured creature designs. From left to right: a ghost bathing in a cauldron full of soup, a fish/dog hybrid and a snail made of pumpkin innards with a jack-o-lantern as a shell.

Pictured above: The first three of October’s Halloween Adoptables. From left to right: Spoopysoup, the broth ghost, Fishbreath the Innsmouth Hound, and Gourdy the pumpkin goop snail.

Promoting this might be a bit of a challenge, but I will do my best with bluesky and YouTube.
If it’s your thing, mark your calendar for the 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th, and 30th of October. Those are the dates when – hopefully – I’ll be putting each new set of adoptables up on my shop.

Media Spotlight

  • A lovely video by Cezar Capacle in which he shares his story of becoming a full-time indie TTRPG designer.

  • It was recently Chaoclypse’s birthday: as an incredibly generous treat he’s published a new game called Wayfarer and an adventure to go with it! Chao’s had an incredibly rough year, so if you can please do support his work!

  • Check out this fantastic dark fantasy/comedy puppet short by Adam Murray, starring Erika Ishii: The Traveler & The Troll. It’s definitely inspired by the work of Jim Henson (particularly Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal), and all the stronger for it!

  • And last but certainly not least, some Positive Leftist News from September!

That’s all for this issue!

As always, thank you so much for reading.

One last reminder that if you feel like supporting my work, you can buy something from my website or itchio, join my Patreon as a paying member, or commission me.

If none of the above are doable for you, please consider spreading the word about my work to your friends!
